Hypnosis – What It Is And What It Is Not
Hypnosis and its subset, hypnotherapy, have always been mired in myths. People either believe them to be bordering on occult, or don\’t regard them to be genuine scientific endeavours. Some of the common myths associated with hypnosis and the reality behind them are discussed here.
There is no mysticism or rituals involved in hypnosis. Psychology and the other sciences have an important role to play in the hypnotic procedure, and it is very easy to acquire and practice. People refuse to acknowledge hypnosis even after watching participants successfully undergoing it in public sessions. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are mentally not strong enough. But nothing could be farther from the truth. Hypnosis can be done on anyone irrespective of his or her levels of will power.
That hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness is another myth that has been circulating for quite some time now. A hypnotized person is fully awake to what is going on around him. Hypnosis actually brings forth a state of absolute calm characterized by a rise in levels of attentiveness, and this intensified sensitivity helps the subject to absorb new inputs without difficulty.
Another misconception, which has been propagated by some researchers, claims that hypnosis can be applied on merely 5% of the human population. Researchers have come up with this low result because they have used the same hypnosis procedure on all subjects without focusing on their individual natures. One hypnosis procedure for all is not a workable answer as different people come under different character types, and hence respond to different techniques.
Meditation and hypnosis are usually thought to be the same by people. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and normally has nothing to do with communication. Similarly, a state of trance is also sometimes equated with hypnosis, which is not true. Just like meditation, trance is a state of mind, and it is not linked with communication in any manner, whereas the very crux of the hypnosis technique is communication.
A majority of people believe that it is not possible to bring about changes in one\’s appearance and conduct through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot achieve something that is abnormal to the body. However, it can guide the body to a better shape through behavioural transformations like eating in a controlled manner, and giving up smoking and other addictions by ensuring a high level of inspiration in an individual.
Hypnosis, and particularly hypnotherapy, can have a vital function to play in the well-being of an individual, and not trying them out just because of some false notions is an act of folly.
